Commandments 161 - 240

Note:  Commandment numbers relating to Israel appear as NN.  Those relating to the Temple appear as NN.

Commandment

Verse

161   An earthen vessel with which one of them in death might come in contact

shall be shattered and any food or drink in it shall be unclean.

Unclean food or drink must be discarded without touching it.

Lev 11:33,34

162   Everything, even a furnace or a range for pots, on which one of them lands

or falls in death shall be unclean and shall be destroyed.

Modern home appliances are exempt from this commandment.  However, this commandment

               applies if you are camping.

Lev 11:35

163  However, a cistern or fountain with plenty of water shall be clean.

But ... see the next commandment.

Lev 11:36

164  Anyone in the cistern or fountain coming in contact with the dead thing

         shall be unclean.

The previous commandment and this one must apply only to artificial pools of water.  If they

applied to ponds, lakes, rivers, and oceans, swimming in any of them without violating this

commandment might be impossible.  However, it applies to swimming pools, public and private.

So a Jew must be careful to clean out all insect carcasses before entering any pool.  Still, if an

insect lands on the water and dies, and the person comes in contact with it, he will become

             unclean.

Lev 11:36

165  If some of their carcass would fall in any sowing seed that would be sown,

         the seed shall be clean.

Lev 11:37

166  But if the seed is dampened, it is unclean.

Lev 11:38

167  One coming in contact with a kosher animal that has died of causes other

than sacrifice shall be unclean until the evening.

Lev 11:39

168  One carrying it or eating of it shall wash their clothes and be unclean until

         evening.

Lev 11:40

169  All creeping creatures swarming on the earth, moving on their belly or

creeping on four or more feet, shall not be eaten.

Lev 11:41,42

170  You shall not become detestable, unclean, or defiled by them.

The “you” is plural.  Therefore, this applies to every Jew.  The pronoun them refers back

to commandment 167.  Why does the verse use the adjectives “detestable” and “defiled”

along with “unclean?”  Doesn’t unclean cover all possibilities?  Not so!  Detestable is not

unclean, although detestable things are all unclean.  Yet no detestable thing can be

made clean.  What is detestable remains detestable forever, whether it is a creature,

an act, or a human.  Defiled is beyond unclean and so requires deeply felt remorse and

repentance.  Only in that way may defiled be forgiven or redeemed.  One of the primary

ways that someone in the bible can defile himself -- and his victim -- is to commit rape

.      Finally, if enough people deliberately defile themselves, the land also becomes defiled

and the people would likely be ousted from their land.  See Levi. 18:26 to 18:30 for the

             reason for this commandment.

Lev 11:43

171  Women shall observe the procedures of purification after giving birth.

Lev 12:2-8

172  The priests shall conduct procedures of diagnosis and cleansing of

malignancies of the skin, of garments, and of habitations.

Lev Chptrs13,14

173  A person with a malignancy shall have his clothes rent, uncover his head,

cover his beard, and cry out, "Unclean, unclean!"

Lev 13:45

174  The priest shall follow the procedures pertaiing to a malignancy of an

          individual.

Lev 14:2-7

175  The malignancy victim, when healed and pronounced clean, shall follow the

         procedures pertaining to him.

Lev 14:9,10

176  The priest shall follow the procedures pertaining to the one who is being

         cleansed from his malignancy.

Lev 14:11-32

177  When a malignancy appears in a house, the owner shall notify the priest.

Lev 14:34,35

178  The house in which there is a malignancy shall be emptied of its contents

and its inhabitants before the priest comes to inspect it.

Lev 14:36

179  The priests shall follow the procedures pertaining to a malignancy in a

         house.

Lev 14:37-53

180  The law pertaining to one who has an issue from his flesh shall be followed.

Moses is speaking to the congregation; that is, the Israelites and the priests.  The words

“an issue from his flesh” refer to any open sore.

Lev 15:2-15

181  The law pertaining to one who ejaculates shall be followed.

Moses is speaking to the congregation; that is, the Israelites and the priests.

Lev 15:16-18

182  The law pertaining to female vaginal discharge shall be followed.

Moses is speaking to the congregation; that is, the Israelites and the priests.

Lev 15:19-29

183  The High Priest shall not enter within the veil of the holy of holies at just any

          time.

He may enter only once a year, on Yom Kippur.

Lev 16:2

184  The High Priest shall follow the procedures for Yom Kippur.

Lev 16:3-33

185  The person releasing the scapegoat shall wash himself, then may reenter

          the camp.

Lev 16:26

186  The person burning the bullock and goat of the sin offering shall wash his

clothes and bathe himself, then may reenter camp.

Lev 16:28

187  You shall afflict your souls on Yom Kippur.

The Talmudists tell us that to afflict our souls means to fast.  This must be wrong, and I don’t

know how they came to their conclusion.  A sacrifice (fire offering) must be brought on Yom

Kippur, and it has to be eaten by the priests, presumably on that day (see Levi. 23:27,

Commandment 294).  No where are we told the priests don’t need to afflict their souls.  See my

remarks about this on rubinspace.org.  The “you” in this verse is plural, meaning that every

one is responsible for obeying this commandment.

Lev 16:29

188  You shall do no manner of work on Yom Kippur.

This verse means what it says:  No manner of work.  It is more stringent than the Sabbath

avoidance of work.  You may do no work of any kind on Yom Kippur.  All you can do is get

dressed after you wake up, eat if you’re not fasting, and walk to synagogue and remain there all

day praying and dwelling on your sins and humbling your soul.  You may return home when the

sun goes down, and then you may eat, whether you fasted or not.  The “you” in this verse is

also plural.  No one may do any work.

Lev 16:29

189  One slaughtering an animal that is fit for sacrifice outside the Tabernacle

/Temple must bring it to the priests.

Lev 17:3,4

190  The priest shall sprinkle the blood of the sacrifice on the altar.

Lev 17:5

191  The children of Israel shall not sacrifice their offerings to pagan gods.

Lev 17:7

192  He (of the children of Israel or a stranger sojourning with them) who hunts

any animal that may be eaten shall pour out its blood and cover it with

         earth.

Lev 17:13

193  Anyone eating an animal that died by itself or was torn by beasts shall

wash his clothes and bathe in water and be unclean until evening.

Obviously, this applies to kosher animals.

Lev 17:14

194  You shall not have sexual relations with your father or mother.

The “you” in this verse and in most of the rest of the verses in this chapter is singular.  Oddly,

the scribe seems to have altered his perspective for most of the rest of this chapter.  He seems

to have inverted the meaning of singular second-person pronouns.  Moses seems now to be

talking to each individual rather than the entire congregation.  Even more oddly, aside from this

rare exception to my rule, there is no mention of one’s daughter in this entire chapter.  Notice

that the phrase “father or” is crossed out.  That part of this commandment is subsumed by

             Commandment 209 below.

Lev 18:7

195  You shall not have sexual relations with your stepmother.

Lev 18:8

196  You shall not have sexual relations with your sister or half-sister.

Lev 18:9

197  You shall not have sexual relations with your granddaughter.

200  You shall not have sexual relations with your mother's sister.

201  You shall not have sexual relations with the wife of your father's brother.

Lev 18:14

202  You shall not have sexual relations with your daughter-in-law.

Lev 18:15

203  You shall not have sexual relations with your sister-in-law.

Lev 18:16

204  You shall not have sexual relations with a woman together with her

         daughter or her granddaughter.

Lev 18:17

205  You shall not have sexual relations with a woman together with her sister.

Lev 18:18

206  You shall not have sexual relations with a woman who is in her menstrual

         uncleanness.

Lev 18:19

207  You shall not have sexual relations with your neighbor's wife.

Lev 18:20

208  You shall not dedicate any of your children  to Molech.

Lev 18:21

209  A man shall not have sexual relations with another man.

See my extensive remarks about this verse at Rubinspace and Rubinhood.

Lev 18:22

210  No man or woman shall have sexual relations with an animal.

Lev 18:23

211  You shall not reap the corner of your field.

The scribe continues the exception to my rule in most of this Chapter 19 as well.

Lev 19:9

212  You shall not gather the gleaning of your harvest.

Lev 19:9

213  You shall leave the corner of your field for the poor and the stranger.

Lev 19:10

214   When harvesting the fruit of your vineyard, you shall not glean it or gather

          the fallen fruit.

Lev 19:10

215   You shall leave the gleanings and fallen fruit for the poor and the stranger.

Lev 19:10

216   You shall not swear falsely by the Lord's name.

Lev 19:12

217   You shall not oppress your fellow.

Lev 19:13

218   You shall not withhold wages of a hired servant till morning.

Lev 19:13

219   You shall not despise the deaf.

Lev 19:14

220   You shall not put stumbling blocks before the blind.

Lev 19:14

221   You shall judge your fellow with righteousness.

This may or may not apply mostly to judges.  But I believe it applies to all of us.  This means

we may not pardon one who is weak and we may not favor someone strong -- and vice versa.

Incidentally, the verse contains both plural and singular second-person pronouns.  See my

             remarks in rubinspace.org about this.

Lev 19:15

222   You shall not go about talebearing.

Lev 19:16

223   You shall not stand idly by the blood of your neighbor.

Lev 19:16

224   You shall not hate your brother in your heart.

Lev 19:17

225   You shall rebuke your fellow when he sins..

Lev 19:17

226   You shall not bear sin because of your fellow.

Lev 19:17

227   You shall not take vengeance with the children of your people.

Lev 19:18

228   You shall not  hold a grudge with the children of your people.

Lev 19:18

229   You shall love your neighbor as yourself.

Lev 19:18

230   You shall not crossbreed your cattle.

Lev 19:19

231   You shall not sow your farm with different kinds of seeds.

Lev 19:19

232   You shall not wear a garment made of two kinds of fabric.

                                                                   [Return to Commandment 509]

Lev 19:19

233   When a man would have sex with a bondwoman who is designated to

another man and she has not been redeemed or her freedom given to her,

          there shall be an examination.

The priest shall be the examiner.  He decides what is to be done in this situation, except see

             next two commandments.

Lev 19:20

234   Neither of them shall be killed.

Lev 19:20

235   The man shall bring a guilt offering to the tent of meeting/Temple.

Lev 19:21

236   A newly planted tree shall not be pruned nor its fruit eaten for three years.

Lev 19:23

237   In the fourth years its fruit shall be only for holy purposes.

That is, only for offerings to the Tabernacle/Temple.

Lev 19:24

238   In the fifth year and beyond its fruit may be eaten.

Lev 19:25

239   You shall not practice divination.

What is divination, you may ask.  Let me tell you.  It is the seeking of knowledge about the

future or the unknown by supernatural means.

Lev 19:26

240   You shall not make magic.

Magic in the biblical sense encompasses a very broad range of supernatural acts.  For example,

it includes using formulaic recitations to achieve goals that were otherwise unrealizable, sorcery,

seers, the wearing of charms, and even necromancy.
